The V-22 Osprey is routinely used as an example of irresponsible Congressional spending. Beginning in the early 1980s, this newly designed helicopter was seen as the answer to the aging fleet of helicopters used by the United States Marines. To date, this helicopter has yet to go into mainstream production due to numerous defects in its design. Several crashes of the Osprey were responsible for the deaths of 30 Marines. Finally, a well publicized episode of 60 Minutes highlighted the deliberate alteration of documents to hide the true operational status of existing V22 helicopters.
The most vigorous supporter of the V22 Osprey is Curt Weldon. Components of the V22 are made in the 7th Congressional District of Pennsylvania. Not surprisingly, the defense industry is Curt Weldon's biggest contributor in his reelection bids.
